Gout is a very painful arthritic condition where the root cause is the excess of uric acid in the body.

Purines can build up and accumulate over time in certain body joints, caused by the over-production of uric acid in the body or caused by a lack of purines elimination by the kidneys. There is also bad foods which are high in purines which need to be avoided.

This is a list by the The American Medical Association with foods containing high levels of purines: any form of alcohol , anchovies, sardines in oil, herring, yeasts, organ meats, legumes (dried beans, peas), mushrooms, spinach, cauliflower, asparagus, consume, meat extracts, and gravies made from meat sources.

Those foods can create high purine levels in the body which in turn will create the harmful uric acid crystals. The uric acid crystals will build up on the joints (most commonly it is the big toe which is affected) and are the main cause of the painful gout attacks. About 850 out of every 100,000 people can be affected by this condition.

Avoiding those purine-rich foods and lots of drinking can reduce the possibility of gout attacks.

There is also beneficial foods for prevention of Gout which can lower the amount of uric acid in the body. According to The American Medical Association those foods are: dark and purple berries, salmon, tofu, flax and olive oils, nuts.

It is important to follow a low protein/low fat diet which is rich in complex carbohydrates. In addition, the gout patient should drink plenty of fluids like water, juice, coffee, tea. Coffee is said to be very beneficial for Gout as many studies suggest, although its likely not the caffeine playing a primary role here.

Since obesity itself can result in heightened levels or uric acid it is crucial to keep and maintain a healthy body weight with plenty of exercise.

The right diet low in purines and with the beneficial foods will reduce uric acid levels and thus reduce the Gout symptoms.
